Wisdom Worth Having – Rhetoric Stage Ethos (Ages ~14–18+)

 

At Wisdom Worth Having, the Rhetoric Stage is where knowledge, logic, and skill converge into mature expression and purposeful action. Students learn to speak and write with clarity, conviction, and persuasive power — always grounded in biblical truth. Theology remains the unshakable foundation, but by ages 14–15 students should be actively encouraged to develop a clear vision for their lives and to become hyper-focused on their calling. For many, this means dedicating a large portion of each day to rigorous Skill Training in marketable, real-world competencies. Whether pursuing aviation, engineering, coding, trades, business building, or any other vocation, students learn to solve problems from first principles, design their own pathways, and produce tangible value. The ultimate goal is to raise young men and women who think deeply, communicate boldly, work diligently, and glorify God through excellent service in the marketplace and in His Kingdom.

 

Theology: Students solidify their grasp of systematic theology and advanced principles of biblical interpretation. They affirm the Bible as the inspired, inerrant Word of God through the Holy Spirit and study the full breadth of major theological themes across Scripture. All instruction remains consistent with our Reformed statement of faith. Students are challenged not only to understand doctrine but to articulate it winsomely, apply it to every area of life, and defend it against competing worldviews.

 

Literature: Students become well-versed in the great ideas, beliefs, and imaginative works that form the common cultural consensus of Western civilization. They explore how timeless truths and great ideas find expression in literature, gaining context for every other field of study. Through deep reading and discussion, they learn to discern beauty, expose falsehood, and appreciate language as a gift from God to be stewarded for His glory.

 

Rhetoric: Students master formal rhetoric and hone their skills through constant practice across all subjects. This training culminates in the research, writing, and public defense of a substantial thesis paper in the senior year. Students learn to persuade others in a God-glorifying manner — offering a clear reason for the hope within them and winsomely advocating for biblical truth in ethics, politics, culture, and public life.

 

Mathematics: Students achieve mastery of advanced mathematics, including complex equations with single and multiple variables, geometric proofs, and trigonometric applications. Mathematics is taught as a reflection of God’s ordered, logical mind and the rational structure of creation, equipping students with precision of thought essential for excellence in any calling.

 

Sciences: Students develop a robust understanding of general science, biology (including anatomy & physiology and marine biology), chemistry, and physics. Through the scientific method they refine inductive reasoning while continually beholding the glory of God displayed in His creation. Science is presented as a tool for dominion, discovery, and stewardship under Christ.

 

Skill Training & Vocational Focus: A defining feature of the Rhetoric Stage at Wisdom Worth Having is deep, daily skill mastery. Students devote a substantial portion of each day to deliberate practice in a chosen domain — whether aviation, software development, carpentry, electrical engineering, entrepreneurship, cooking, mechanics, or launching a micro-business. They are trained to break problems down to first principles, build real projects, generate income, and create their own customized pathways toward professional excellence. This is not peripheral but central: we believe God calls His people to useful, dignified work that serves others and advances His Kingdom. By graduation, every student should possess both intellectual depth and marketable competence.
